How to Install the Google PlayStore in your Amazon Fire Tablet

Luis Pinto, Head of Content

See how you can install the Google PlayStore in your Amazon Fire tablet and control your smart home with it

Amazon Fire tablet also known as Kindle Fire is a cheap tablet you can buy on Amazon. These tablets are great to create your smart home controller dashboard and manage all your smart home devices from them.

In this blog post we already talked about how to turn your tablet into a home automation controller. However most of the time we would need to install Android Apps and have access to Google Play services. Amazon’s Fire Tablet normally restricts you to the Amazon AppStore. But as the Fire Tablet is running an Android based OS we can also install the Google Play Store and have access to Android Apps.

Installing the Play Store in your Fire Tablet

Step 1: Enable apps from unknown sources

To do so, go to Settings > Security and enable “Apps from Unknown Sources”. This will allow you to install APKS downloaded from the internet.

As the PlayStore it isn’t available in the Amazon AppStore we need to download it from the internet.

Step 2: Download the APK file to install the PlayStore

We would need to install some packages in order to run the PlayStore properly in our fire tablet. You can download the apk files from this trustworthy source. Download all of them in your tablet.

  1. Google Account Manager Apk
  2. Google Services Framework

3. If you have the 2017 Fire HD 8 download this Google PlayStore version otherwise Google PlayStore

Step 3: Install the APK files you downloaded

APK files will be stored under Docs > LocalStorage tab > Download

Simply tap on every file we’ve download. Order is important so install files in the same order it’s in the previous step.

Remark: If the “Install button” is greyed out lock the tablet and unlock it. It should turn to orange and then you can keep on installing the APK file

Step 4:  Turn your tablet into a home controller

After installing the google play services, an icon will show up in the desktop. Open it. It will update in the background so maybe at the beginning it will look like it’s slow.

Look for Yeti Smart Home in the PlayStore and install it.

Then, go to this blog post and see how you can start controlling your smart home using your tablet

Yeti

Yeti can also help you to save energy with your smart home devices. If you still don’t know Yeti, you can get it for:

- Android

- iOS

Yeti allows you to control different smart home devices using a single interface.

There are two ways you can use it to save energy: routines and charms.

Routines

Routines will allow you to turn on/off your devices at a selected time. You won’t leave your lights turned on by accident as you will be able to set up a timer. Also, you can turn on your lights based on sunrise.

Any of the devices can be configured to work with routines. However, lights and plugs make more sense as you can configure your thermostat to work in the eco mode before leaving. (See charms below)

Some routines will help you to keep your devices on/off

Charms

Charms are the other way how you can control your smart appliances to save energy. You can create charms to turn everything off before leaving home and also to set your thermostat in eco mode. So your home will enter into “power saving mode” when you are outside.

You won't leave your devices turned on by accident again

This was a short guide about some tips to save energy using your smart home appliances. In case you have another tip drop a comment below!
